Franchise History

The Denver Broncos are a member of the Western Division of the American Football Conference (AFC) in the National Football League (NFL). They won the first-ever AFL game on September 9, 1960 against the Boston Patriots (13-10). On August 5, 1967, the Broncos were the first AFL team to defeat an NFL team. In 1972, John Ralston was hired as the Broncos head coach. In five seasons, Ralston guided the Broncos to winning three seasons. The Broncos’ first appearance in the playoffs was in 1977, leading it to their first Super Bowl, where they defeated the Dallas Cowboys (27-10). In 1981, Broncos owner Gerald Phipps, who had purchased the team from Bob Howsam (the original owner), sold the team to Edgar Kaisir, Jr.

In 1983, John Elway became the quarterback for the Broncos. Prior to Elway, Denver had over 24 different starting quarterbacks in its 23 seasons to that time. Elway would remain the quarterback through five Super Bowls, and he and the Broncos will go on to win two of them.

Recent History
In 2009, in honor of their 50th anniversary season as one of the eight original AFL teams, the Broncos will wear their 1960 throwback uniforms (brown helmets, mustard yellow and brown jerseys) for two games – October 11 against the New England Patriots, and October 19 against the San Diego Chargers.
