The Green Bay Packers are an American professional football team founded in 1919 by Earl "Curly" Lambeau, and George Calhoun.  Located in Green Bay, Wisconsin, the Packers are a member of the National Football League (NFL) National Football Conference (NFC) North Division.  The Packers are the third oldest team in the National Football League (NFL), and have won the most championships, nine NFL Championships (1929, 1930, 1931, 1936, 1939, 1944, 1961, 1962, 1965) and three Super Bowls (I,II,XXXI).

History

The Green Bay Packers were led by Coach Vince Lombardi from 1959-1967.  During that period, the Packers won the first two Super Bowls (I,II) of the National Football League (NFL).  Packers star players included quarterback Bart Starr, running backs Paul Hornung, Jim Taylor, Carroll Dale, offensive guard Jerry Kramer, defensive players Ray Nitschke, Willie Wood, and Herb Adderly.

Green Bay Packers of the 60’s

The Packers reached the National Football League (NFL) championship game in 1960 to lose to the Philadelphia Eagles.  They made it to the championship game the next year in 1961 to defeat the New York Giants.  Paul Hornung starred in the game, scoring a championship record 19 points.  The Packers won their second consecutive National Football League (NFL) championship in 1962 after a strong 13-1 season.  They defeated the New York Giants, 16-7.  As a result of the Packers’ success, the team was featured on the cover of Time on December 21, 1962, as the face of the NFL.  The cover story for the magazine was “The Sport of the 60’s".  The Packers won their 3rd National Football League (NFL) title with Lombardi by defeating the Browns in 1965.
In 1966, the Green Bay Packers won Super Bowl I, defeating the Pittsburgh Steelers, 35-10.  That year quarterback Bart Starr was named National Football League (NFL) MVP.  In Vince Lombardi’s last year as head coach, the Packers played in the “ice bowl”, one of the most famous football games in history.  Quarterback Bart Starr scored a touchdown on a quarterback sneak in the last seconds of the game to their third straight NFL championship game.  They went on to win Super Bowl II against the Oakland Raiders 33-14.
The Super Bowl trophy was renamed the Vince Lombardi Trophy after his death in September 1970 in recognition of Vince Lombardi, and his Green Bay Packers accomplishments.

Green Bay Packers of the 1990’s (Favre era)

After a poor 1970’s, and 1980’s, the Packers organization underwent a major personnel transformation.  Ron Wolf was hired as the new General Manager, whom hired new head coach Mike Holmgren, former San Francisco 49ers offensive coordinator.  Wolf is also credited with acquiring legendary quarterback Brett Favre from the Atlanta Falcons for a first round draft pick.  During this time, they also acquired free agent Reggie White, known as one of the greatest defensive lineman in National Football League (NFL) history.   In the 1990’s the Packers reached the playoffs in 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, and 1998.
In 1996, the Green Bay Packers defeated the New England Patriots, 35-21 to win Super Bowl XXXI.  The Packers returned to the Super Bowl XXXII in 1997, however, lost to the Denver Broncos, 31-24.

2009 Green Bay Packers

The Green Bay Packers went into the 2009 season with Mike McCarthy as head coach and Aaron Rodgers at quarterback.  Rodgers has two very talented wide receivers to throw to, Donald Driver and Greg Jennings.  On October 18, 2009, Donald Driver made his 596th catch to surpass former Green Bay reception record holder Sterling Sharpe.  That game also marked 116 consecutive games with a catch, another franchise record.
The 2009 Defense includes veteran stars Charles Woodson (former Michigan Heisman trophy winner) and Al Harris at defensive back, and A.J. Hawk and Aaron Kampman at the linebacker position.  In the 2009 draft, the Packers looked to upgrade their defense.  They used their first round pick and traded for another first round pick in order to draft standout defensive lineman B.J. Raji from Boston College and linebacker Clay Matthews III from USC.
