The New York Giants are an American Professional Football Team located in East Rutherford, New Jersey.  The Giants are a member of the National Football League’s (NFL) National Football Conference (NFC) East Division.  They joined the National Football League (NFL) in 1925.  They are nicknamed the “G-Men”.  Their division opponents are the Washington Redskins, Philadelphia Eagles and Dallas Cowboys.  The New York Giants won four National Football League (NFL) championships (1927, 1934, 1938, 1956) and three Super Bowl titles (Super Bowl XXI, XXV, XLII).

History

The New York Giants played their first National Football League (NFL) game against the All New Britain and won 26-0.  They finished their first season (8-4).  The Giants reached the National Football League (NFL) championship game 8 times in 14 years from 1933-1946, winning twice.

New York Giants of the 80’s -90’s

The New York Giants began to build a legendary franchise in the early 80’s.  Quarterback Phil Simms was drafted in 1979, and linebacker Lawrence Taylor was drafted in 1981.  Lawrence Taylor won the National Football League (NFL)Rookie of the Year award and the National Football League (NFL)Defensive player of the year award in 1981.  Bill Parcells took over as head coach in 1983, and led the Giants in 1986 to Super Bowl XXI and a victory against the Denver Broncos 39-20.  Many stars contributed to the Super Bowl XXI season including, tight end Mark Bavaro, linebacker Harry Carson, and running back Joe Morris.
After the 1990 National Football League (NFL) season, Coach Bill Parcells stepped down as head coach and was replaced by offensive coordinator Ray Handley.  After two poor seasons, Ray Handley was fired and replaced by former Denver Broncos coach Dan Reeves.  Reeves was then fired after the 1996 National Football League (NFL) season and replaced by Jim Fassel.  In Fassel’s second season, the Giants reached the playoffs after a 10-5 season.

New York Giants of the 2000’s

In 2000, the Giants finished the National Football League (NFL) season with a 12-4 record to reach the playoffs.  They beat the Philadelphia Eagles 20-10 in the first round of the playoffs, and defeated the Minnesota Vikings 41-0 in the National Football Conference (NFC) championship game.  The Giants made it to Super Bowl XXXV to lose to the Baltimore Ravens 34-7.
In 2004, after a few years of struggling, Jim Fassel was fired and replaced by head coach Tom Coughlin.  2004 was also the year the Giants acquired quarterback Eli Manning in a draft day trade.  Manning was initially drafted by the San Diego Chargers.

Super Bowl XLII

The New York Giants played the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLII in Glendale, Arizona.  The New York Giants were heavy underdogs, but still managed to defeat the New England Patriots, who were undefeated at the time (18-0).  One of the crucial plays in the final drive for the Giants was a Eil Manning pass to wide receiver David Tyree, now considered one of the greatest plays in Super Bowl history.  The drive finished with a touchdown pass from Manning to receiver Plaxico Burress.

2009 New York Giants

In 2009, the Giants opened the season with legal issues for their wide receiver Plaxico Burress.  Burress was convicted of endangerment to the public for shooting himself in the leg at a nightclub.  The Giants released Plaxico Burress and drafted Hakeem Nicks a wide receiver from North Carolina.  In 2009, the Giants continue to run their traditional game plan, a strong defense, and a strong running game.  The Giants defense is known to have one of the top front seven in the National Football League (NFL) .  Osi Umenyiora, Justin Tuck, Fred Robbins, and Chris Canty lead the defensive line, while Antonio Pierce and Michael Boley run the linebacker position.  On offense, the Giants have a deep backfield, led by power running back Brandon Jacobs and Ahmad Bradshaw.  Manning’s receivers are Mario Manningham, Steve Smth, and Hakeem Nicks.
