The Origin
The New York Jets were originally known as the Titans of New York and played games at Polo Grounds. The team’s future was in trouble after they finished 5-9 for the season, but was bought out by a five-man syndicate: David A. “Sonny” Werblin, Townsend B. Martin, Leon Hess, Donald C. Lillis and Phillip H. Iselin in 1964 for $1 million and renamed it the Jets. Weeb Ewbank was hired as head coach and led the team to two consecutive NFL championships in 1958 and 1959.

Joe Namath, the former Alabama quarterback, was picked up by the Jets in 1967 and let them to an 8-5-1 record. In 1968, Namath would lead the Jets to an AFL Championship defeating the Oakland Raiders 27-23. The win against the Oakland Raiders qualified the Jets to play against the NFL Champions, which is being referred to as Super Bowl III. On Janruary 12, 1969 the New York Jets defeated the Baltimore Colts in one of the greatest upsets in Football history 16-7.  After the AFL-NFL merger was final in 1970, Namath missed most of the seasons of 1970, 1971, and 1973 due to injuries. On his return Namath would show more interception than touchdowns, but finished with a respectable season of 7-7. He was eventually traded to the Rams in 1976, but only stay there four months before announcing his retirement at the young age of 34.

Jets were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs to the Bills. In 1983 the lease with the city to use Shea Stadium expired and as a result they agreed to play at Giants Stadium located in East Rutherford, New Jersey starting 1984. The Jets lost the opening game at the new stadium against the Steelers 23-17. In 1985 the Jets made the playoffs with a season record of 11-5. In 1992 Coslet was fired and replaced by Pete Carol. Carol was later fired in 1994 after he finished 6-10 for the season. Rich Kotite would be next to be head coach but only lasted 2 years after he finished both seasons with a total of four wins going 3-13 in 1995 and 1-15 in 1996.
