Franchise History

Houston Oilers (1960- 96)
Bud Adam had made several unsuccessful bids at a NFL expansion team for Houston, he began as a chartered member of the AFL in the 1960s. The Houston Oilers appeared in the first three AFL Championships. They were the first team in AFL history to sign an active NFL player away from another league. William Dewveall joined the Houston Oilers leaving the Chicago Bears and in 1962 caught the longest pass reception in Football history of 99 yards.

The Merger (1970s)
After the NFL and AFL merged in the 1970s, the Oilers started to drop to the bottom of the AFC Central ranking. However, by the mid 1970s, the Oilers began to rally with the help of Hall of Fame coach Sid Gilman. Following Gilman was Bum Phillips, who would lead the Oilers to three playoff seasons, two of which they made it to the AFC Championship game, but those lead to two consecutive losses to the Steelers which prompted Phillips to be fired.

1980s
The Oilers continued to experience more poor seasons through the early part of the 1980s, but in 1984 the Oilers won a bid for Football legend Warren Moon. The Oilers would find themselves in the playoffs 3 years later and failed to make it to the Super Bowl.

Last of Houston (1990s)
Although the Oilers won their first division title since 1967 in 1991, Adams threatened to move the team to Jacksonville. After three losses in the wild card game and three losses in divisional playoffs, he threatened again to break the team up if they didn’t make the Super Bowl in 1993. The Oilers reacted with a strong year finishing 12-4 and won another AFC Central title, but still fell short losing in the second round to the Chiefs. Furious, Adams traded Moon to the Minnesota Vikings leaving the Oilers without a leader. They would go on to end the season 2-14 and although they would improve back to an average record they would never make it to the playoffs again in Texas. In 1996, the Oilers stadium crowd diminished to 20,000 people even though they finish 8-8. They won more game on the road 6-2 than they did at home. Adams was released early from his lease by the city so that he can move the team to Tennessee .

Tennessee Titans (1999 – Present)
In 1999, Adams announced that due to fan request he was changing the team name from Oilers to the Tennessee  Titans starting that year. In the first team game as the Titans, they defeated the Cinniciti Bengals and finished the season 13-3. During the first playoff game against the Bills, they pulled off a miracle win running back 75 yards with 16 seconds left in the game on a kickoff return to win the game. The Titans went one to win their next two game, beating the Indianapolis Colts and then Jacksonville Jaguarss in the AFC Championship game. The Titan’s season lead them to Super Bowl XXXIV against the St. Louis Rams, but were devastated when Kevin Dyson was tackled one yard short of the end zone as regulation time expired. Losing the game 23-16.

In 2000, they ended the season 13-3 and won the AFC Central title, but would go to lose the Divisional Playoff game. The next year they ended with a record of 11-5 and made it to the AFC Champion game but lost against Oakland.

The Titans went 12-4 in 2003 and made it to the playoffs, but lost against the New England Patriots in the AFC divisional. The Titans started to slide downhill after that finishing 5-11 in 2004 due to injuries and salary caps. In 2005, continued to struggle with a season record of 4-12 but had a young team for a lot of potential growth.

In 2006, quarterback Vince Young lead the Titans to an 8-8 record. They finished the next year 10-6, making it to the playoffs losing to the San Diego Chargers 17-6 in the wild card round.

In 2008, Kerry Collins took over after Vince Young endured an injury in week 1. Collins would lead the Titans to a 10-0 start finishing the season 13-3, however they lost their first home playoff game against the Ravens 13-10. Titans had 3 redzone turnovers and 12 penalties by Titans.

Logos and Uniforms

Back in the 1960’s when the team first debut, the logo was an oil rig derrick and besides some color changes remained the same until they were renamed the Titans. The oil rig was originally called Ol’ Riggy. When the team was renamed the club introduced a new logo: A circle with three stars. Since 2000 the Titans have worn dark uniforms for home and preseason games until the Titans introduced an alternate jersey that is light "Titan Blue." These "Titan Blue" jerseys become regular home uniforms in 2008.
