Washington Redskins

The Washington Redskins are one of four teams who play in the Eastern Division of the National Football Conference (NFC) of the National Football League (NFL). Some people refer to the Washington Redskins as “The Skins”.
Early Years of the Washington Redskins
Before the Redskins began playing in Washington D.C. they started out as the Boston Braves (1932), after completing their first season with only 4 wins the team was moved to Fenway Park. The team name was then changed to the Boston Redskins. After three years in Boston and having mediocre seasons the Redskins were moved to Washington, because of poor fan attendance.
In their first year in Washington the team signed quarterback Sammy Baugh. He was the first quarterback to use the pass as his main weapon of offense. Baugh was able to lead the Washington Redskins to multiple championship games in the 40’s.
The early winning seasons of the Washington Redskins would not last long. Starting from 1946 all the way through 1968 the Redskins could only muster three winning seasons, all the blame can be put on owner George Preston Marshall who did not want to integrate the team despite Federal Government pressure.
By the end of the 1970’s Marshall would pass away and ownership would be handed over to Edward Bennett Williams and Vince Lombardi would be head coach for one year and helped the Redskins gain a 7-5-2 record before he passed away because of cancer.
Washington Redskins Winning
At the beginning of the 80’s owner Jack Kent Cooke hired Joe Gibbs as their head coach. Gibbs would have great success with players such as Joe Theismann, Art Monk, John Riggins. The Redskins won three Super Bowls with Joe Gibbs as their head coach for 12 years.
Their first Super Bowl in was in Super Bowl XVII where they beat the Miami Dolphins 27-17. In 1987 the Redskins would win their second championship against the Denver Broncos, 42-10. Their third Super Bowl win was against the Buffalo Bills in Super Bowl XXVI, in 1992. The players who helped the Redskins obtain these championships are Doug Williams, Timmy Smith, and Mark Rypien.
Washington Redskins Uniforms and Logos
The main colors of the Washington Redskins are burgundy and gold. In 1978 they added the gold face mask to their helmets and it has not changed since. Their logo has been updated three times in their existence and their fight song is “Hail to the Redskins”.
